The CUHK Engineering team formed by 14 students has recently won the “Renewable Energy Capture & Conversion Efficiency Award" at the New Energy New Generation” Solar Car Competition (tertiary education category) organized by the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department in January. Led by Prof. Wei Ren, Assistant Professor of the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering, the team has designed and built the University’s first-ever solar energy powered vehicle that rides at minimal air resistance efficiently. The carbon-fibre made body of the car has also provided the car with light-weight characteristics. Another feature of the car is the ability to transform. When parked, the car is able to transform and extend the other 3 sets of solar panels. By taking consideration of an ordinary parking space, the car can perfectly fit into a parking space even after transformation. Without the need of electric charging station, the car is able to charge itself anywhere open space. This design is suitable for places without sufficient charging stations like Hong Kong.
