Synopsis

Digital transformation is one of the key conversations across businesses, however, there have been many failure cases. Jennifer is a highly respected accounting professional and Fintech leader who has taken on senior management roles for over two decades. She is recently elected as the Global Council Member of ACCA for 2022-2025. In 2021, she was winner of the Outstanding Women Professionals and Entrepreneurs Award and was named by the Fintech Magazine as one of Fintech’s Top 100 Leaders in a global league table. In 2019, she was named ACCA Advocate of the Year, both for Hong Kong and Greater China, and was the Chairlady of ACCA Hong Kong for 2021/22. Jennifer is also the consultative and advisory panel member of Hong Kong Internet Registration Corporation and the EXCO Member of the FinTech Specialist Group of Hong Kong Computer Society

BME Student awarded Link University Scholarship 2022/23

Tiffany Choi from the Department of Biomedical Engineering has won the $20,000 Link University Scholarship in recognition of her outstanding achievements in academic studies and community services. Although schoolwork has been keeping her busy, she still manages to find time for volunteering. This summer she took part in Link’s volunteer month activities.
 
Tiffany said, “I like to explore things outside of academic subjects. The more I see and learn, the more I can broaden my horizon.” She took part in the project of Food Angel, another Link-sponsored program, a few months ago. For the project, she went to fresh markets in Lok Fu to collect vegetables and fruits and turn them into meal boxes.  While taking part in the activities, she was stunned by the extent of the wealth gap between the rich and the poor in a prosperous city like Hong Kong. 
 
“If it wasn’t for this experience, I would have no idea about the number of people who are dependent on free meals. Their situations were made worse by the fifth wave of the pandemic, which has taken away many people’s jobs.”
 
Besides helping people, volunteering gives Tiffany the opportunity to see the different segments of society and to make friends with people from different background. This has greatly broadened her life experience. As for the $20,000 scholarship, Tiffany said part of it will be used to pay off tuition fee, while some will go into her savings – she plans to apply for the exchange program to Australia or Europe next year and would need money to cover her living expense abroad. She has also applied for this year’s Link Scholarship and she will continue to take time off her studies and learn more about things happening outside the campus.
 
Supported by Link Together Initiatives, the annual Link University Scholarship program aims to nurture young people and encourage upward mobility. Launched in 2015 and with no income screening requirement, it aims to support students who are the first among the three generations in their families to attend university. This year, 220 awardees were selected from over 2,000 applicants in the 11 universities across Hong Kong.

Abstrast

In this talk, the speaker will share the future outlook of algo trading in Hong Kong from a perspective of a FinTech company focusing on algo trading for years. In particular, Dr Alfred Ma will share his point of view on how easy/difficult a retail investor can deploy their only algo trading strategies and what the implications would be accordingly. Some differences between algo trading at the retail level and institutional level will also be discussed. Academic research as well as his experience in algo trading started from 2009 will be shared.

 

Biography

Dr. Alfred MA

Dr. Alfred MA is a FinTech practitioner and researcher. He holds a PhD in Operations Research from Columbia University, and an MPhil and BSc in Mathematics from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is a CFA charter holder, Professional Risk Manager (PRM), Associate of Society of Actuaries (ASA), and Chartered Engineer (CEng). He has more than 5 years of full-time and part-time teaching experience in quantitative finance area in the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong and Lingnan University. He has published more than 20 articles in peer-reviewed journals including Journal of Computational Finance, Journal of Financial Data Science, and Journal of Trading.


Alfred is now a managing director in CASH Algo Finance Group (CAFG) which started the first algo trading strategy in 2009 and officially entered the FinTech space at HKSTP in 2016. CAFG obtained the various FinTech awards including Fintech of the year 2018 (start up) by etnet. It managed funds both in Hong Kong and China. CAFG has also been training new algo trading strategists in Hong Kong and organized two times inter-university algo trading competition with participants from top universities in both Hong Kong and China including Peking University, Tsinghua University, and Fudan University.

A research team from CUHK Faculty of Engineering and Chun Wo jointly develop cable-driven robot for high-rise building facades

With Hong Kong’s construction industry plagued by manpower shortages over the past few years, safety has never been more important. As a first, a research team led by Professor Darwin Lau Tat Ming, Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Automation Engineering at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)’s Faculty of Engineering, has developed a cable-driven robot which accurately mimics human movement to clean building windows and paint facades. The system is expected to replace human wiper and roller-based window cleaning and facade painting works at high-rise buildings, helping to relieve the industry’s labour shortages, reducing occupational hazards.
 
Gondola systems are commonly used to carry workers to clean windows and paint the facades of high-rise buildings. However, the dangerous, harsh working conditions, particularly the effects of heat, wind and rain, extended working hours and high cost of insurance result in a lack of skilled workers and high labour costs. To address this problem, Professor Lau’s team has developed a cable-driven robot system that alleviates the dependence on labour. The movement of the robot and its platform can be programmed to clean windows or paint automatically. The system is also unique in that it combines the dexterity of robot arms with the cable-driven robot’s ability to work at large scales and perform complex movements. The system can also operate on surfaces that are not completely flat, making it more widely applicable.
 
With funding support by the Innovation and Technology Fund and Chun Wo Construction Holdings Company Limited (Chun Wo), a robotic system has been set up outside a building on the CUHK campus to study its applicability in a real-world environment. Chun Wo has already applied for a patent and intends to use it on construction sites after conducting further research. The company has also provided data to train the robot’s gestures so it cleans windows like a human worker.
 
Professor Darwin Lau Tat Ming remarked, “With the increasing demands on housing and an ageing workforce, the development of building construction and maintenance robotics technology potentially represents a game-changer both for construction workers as well as industry and the wider community. With the use of the system, workers will no longer be exposed to high-risk environments or work in mid-air, helping to reduce accidents. This is an exciting university-industry collaboration that has received generous support from government and Chun Wo, and we believe this novel technology will deliver exciting benefits.”
 
Sr Stephen Lee Ka-lun, Chairman of Chun Wo Construction Holdings Company Limited, said, “Chun Wo has been actively cooperating with various universities and R&D companies to develop various technologies to improve the operational effectiveness and efficiency in the construction industry. The cable-driven robot jointly developed with CUHK not only solves the labour shortage problem but also reduces the risks faced by frontline workers working at heights and is expected to achieve the goal of zero accidents. Chun Wo is glad to cooperate with the industry or other stakeholders in the market in any way to share the achievements of our innovation & technology projects.”l
