Dr. Wong Tak Sing, a distinguished alumnus from the MAE Department, has recently been named a recipient of the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) by US Government. The PECASE Award is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on outstanding scientists and engineers in the early stages of their independent research careers. The awards are conferred annually at the White House following recommendations from participating agencies.

He was also named as one of the world's top 35 innovators under 35 by MIT Technology Review in 2014, for his achievement in ‘inventing one of today’s most intriguing and potentially useful new materials called SLIPS, for slippery liquid–infused porous surface.

Dr. Wong Tak Sing is currently Associate Professor and the inaugural holder of Wormley Family Early Career Professorship in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University.

BME Student Received Bronze Award at ASM Technology Competition 2019

Chan In Lam, a biomedical engineering undergraduate student won a Bronze award of Silver Award from the ASM Technology competition 2019 with project titled “A wireless implantable intraocular continuous glucose monitor using near field”.  She was supervised by Dr. Marten BRELÉN from the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences.  Launched by ASM Pacific Technology Limited (ASMPT) in 2015, the ASM Technology Award promotes technological innovation in Hong Kong and recognizes students for their accomplishments in technology.

About the wining project:

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease caused by insufficient insulin production or a resistance of the body to use insulin. It is an incurable condition with fatal complications which can be minimized by closely monitoring and managing blood glucose levels. Current glucose monitoring systems have several drawbacks which can be overcome by implanting a wireless glucose sensor inside an eye. Several experiments were performed in the project to provide the proof-of-concept for a wireless implantable intraocular sensor using near field communication.

The project started with a clinical trial to correlate the glucose concentration in aqueous humor and blood from diabetic patients. Thereafter, a wireless glucometer with a customized NFC antenna was built and validated. Finally, an Android app was developed for communication between the glucometer and a smart phone.

The results have convincingly demonstrated the proof-of-concept of implanting a glucose sensor in an eye. Further investigation would be required to test the biocompatibility and dynamic properties on long term glucose sensing in an eye. The ultimate goal of this project is to change the way glucose levels are monitored in diabetic patients by making it more convenient and easier for them to manage their disease. The improved monitoring will allow better glucose control, which will prolong the life of patients and reduce the burden of their disease.

In celebration of the 55th anniversary of CUHK, the Centre for Innovation and Technology (CINTEC) is staging a conference titled “Enroute to the Age of Artificial Intelligence (AI)” today and tomorrow (4-5 July), drawing over 100 technology leaders, experts, researchers and government officials to discuss the growing trends of AI and its potential applications.

The conference was officiated at by Dr. David Wai-keung Chung, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR Government, Professor Wai-yee Chan, Pro-Vice-Chancellor / Vice-President of CUHK, and Professor Martin D.F. Wong, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, CUHK, and chaired by Professor Wong Kam Fai, Associate Dean (External Affairs) of the Faculty of Engineering and Director of CINTEC, CUHK. The many AI experts and industry leaders invited to speak included Dr. Xuemei Gu, CTO, Cainiao of Alibaba Group, Professor Michael Lyu, Chairman, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, CUHK, Professor Leo Jia, Distinguished Scientist and Executive Director, Tencent X-Lab, Dr. C.H. Cheng, Director, Research & Technology Development, Logistics and Supply Chain MultiTech R&D Centre Limited, Dr. Mu Fang, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer, VisionNav Robotics, Dr. Crystal Fok, Associate Director, MPE Cluster & Robotics Platform, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, and Dr. Charleston Sin, Director, Hong Kong Cyberport and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Hong Kong Innovation Node.

In the conference, Dr. David Wai-keung Chung, JP, Under Secretary for Innovation and Technology, HKSAR Government remarked, “Hong Kong’s strength lies in world-class R&D capabilities at our local universities.  And CUHK's students and professors have been very successful to commercialise their R&D results to create high-valued ventures with great social impacts.

Professor Martin D. F. Wong, Dean of Engineering said, “AI is the technology that uses machine intelligence to simulate human intelligence in performing tasks and acquiring information. Thanks to all the breakthroughs in cloud computing, big data analysis and deep learning, the era of AI has just come to us, though its history dates back to the 1950’s. Following the development of innovation and technology and the promotion of technology policies, Hong Kong is seeing a huge manpower shortage of AI specialists. CUHK is the first university in Hong Kong to launch the Bachelor of Engineering Programme in AI, aiming to meet today’s tremendous demand for well-trained talent in AI and related specialisations. We hope it will help boost global economic development.”
